Here is an eye-opening look at America's Welfare State from the inside from someone who escaped.

Six years ago I wrote a book called Uncle Sam’s Plantation. I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it. I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas - a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.

I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps. A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty. A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from "How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"

Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems - the kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others. The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families. Through God’s grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.

I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, passed by a Republican Congress and signed 50 percent. I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producing American capitalism. But, incredibly, we are going in the opposite direction.

Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich America on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism. Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, "Thank you, Suh." Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash. There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.

In an op-ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Mr. Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short term economic stimulus. "This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending - it's a strategy for America ’s long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education." Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place "with unprecedented transparency and accountability."

Yes, sir, we heard it from Jimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education. Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 - The War on Poverty - which President Johnson said "...does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty.”

Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single-parent homes and out-of-wedlock births. It's not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama’s invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and free
dom. Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?

ACORN Is Here In The RGV!

Someone was watching the evening news tonight @ 10:00pm on KNVO channel 48 (Univision).
Apparently, ACORN is starting to make their move in Hidalgo County by fighting for forclosed home owners in the Mission area. This movement will, no doubt, spread, since a lot of people are losing their homes. I wonder who will be their "savior... Obama, don't ya think???

ACORN will have a "counseling" group (Foreclosure Fighters) on KNVO channel 48 from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm on wednesday 6th phone 687-4848.

Independence Day Tea Party Planning Meeting

We had an exciting meeting tonight with about 25 people attending. Some couldn't make it, but are rearing to help. Many great ideas came forth tonight from so many people with lots of enthusiasm. We are looking toward a fantastic time for our Independence Day Tea Party. Below are the minutes of the meeting:

Chairperson Linda Moore called the meeting to order and asked Pastor Ron Smith to pray for the meeting. She then offered some ideas for discussion, such as a location and possible program suggestions. A date of July 4th for the Tea Party was discussed with suggestions of July 3rd a possibility because of the many events in the city of McAllen and surrounding towns for the 4th of July. It was moved and seconded that July 4th be the date to try for. The motion carried. The time for the event was then discussed. After a variety of suggestions and opinions, a motion was made and seconded that the time be set for 6:30 to roughly 8:30 pm with people being invited to stay to watch the City of McAllen fireworks. Motion carried. The name for the Tea Party was discussed with a motion and a second made for Independence Day Tea Party being the suggested name, in the event that the Tea Party had to be held on July 3rd or 5th. Motion carried and Independence Day Tea Party became the name chosen.

A location for the Tea Party was the subject of much discussion with people offering a variety of suggestions. Sandy Propst was designated to secure the location, which she agreed to attempt to do this week before our Tea Party Meeting on May 8th.

Many patriots gave valuable input as to what things should be done at the Independence Day Tea Party, such as selling t-shirts (Sandy Summers and Debbie McGyver), flags (Al Gatti), Constitutions & Declarations of Independences (Ludie Garcia and Roxanna Herring) and having "booths" that would be manned with people to give information/education to those that came by. Constitution and lobbying were two subjects mentioned in the discussion for education in booths. At least five membership tables (Brenda Gatti, Marilyn Rhyne, Debbie McGyver, Joanne Fraser, Larry Schneider) should be available to alleviate the long lines seen at the last Tea Party. Once again, the concesus seemed to be that whatever speakers we have should be "regular folks" and not "politicians".

Scott Carol will check on the possibility of joining the City of McAllen parade and on the possibility of renting a screen for projecting words to songs, while Gary Sage offered his projector to project the words. Mr. Sage also said he would check on magnetic signs that patriots could buy to put on their vehicles to advertise the Tea Party with a blank space below that would allow the date to change, so the sign could be reused. Larry Schneider said we should have yard signs made, as well, to advertise the event in our neighborhoods. It was suggested that one picture be chosen that could be used on the magnetic signs, as well as the yard signs, so people would recognize the logo and know that it was the Tea Party logo immediately.

Linda Moore announced that she has already bought some decorations we can use, and Wendy Soto and Al McGyver volunteered to be on the decorating committee. Linda also said she would be responsible for getting a flat bed truck or two, if needed, for the event.

A motion was made and seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motion carried.

Minutes for our April 24th Meeting

Interim President, Glen Hagenbach, called the meeting to order and asked Juan Cano to give the invocation. Orlando Perez lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. The President introduced the interim board members that were present: President Glen Hagenbach, VP/Sec. Sandy Propst, VP/Treas. Sonny Sparks, Orlando Perez, and Juan Cano. The President explained a little of the background of the beginnings of the McAllen Tea Party a little over a month ago. He said it was an amazing story of a lot happening in a very short period of time.

Under Old Business came a recap of the April 15th Tea Party rally with a report of 1200 patriots attending at Archer Park in McAllen and being potential members of the Rio Grande Valley Tea Party Association. Joanne Fraser reported a sign up sheet with over 1,038 people signing in for email updates. Sue Goldberg from Brownsville and Melanie from Harlingen reported the Brownsville Tea Party had over 700 people attending in the lower end of the Valley. The group did express the notion that this group needs to continue to be nonpartisan with an emphasis on being an American.

An update on incorporation requirements was given by President Glen Hagenbach as he explained the 501C(3), 501C(4) and PAC (internal) groups that would enable the RGV Tea Party Association to be able to function in compliance with the law.

New Business was begun with a call for a discussion of what's next with a Brainstorming session. Ideas ranged from boycotting such things as movies or businesses to programs to educate students and adults in our US Constitution. Many ideas were thrown out for discussion, including forums for discussion and education. Another topic under New Business was events or rallies for future events. By an overwhelming vote, it was moved, seconded and unanimously passed for another Tea Party rally to be held on July 4th. Linda Moore volunteered to chair the July 4th event with several patriots volunteering to join her group to organize the rally. Her group plans to meet on Friday, May 1st. Linda said she would notify her group as to when and where the group will meet. Another event is being planned leading up to Constitution Day, which is Sept. 17th. Roxanna Herring is chairing a group of people that will plan several events that will lead up to Constitution Day. Educational programs were mentioned with comments that education might need to be aimed at both children and adults.

Interested people are asked to email us at mcallenteaparty@yahoo.com to let us know your area of interest, an idea for a project or a committee that interests you. Please keep us informed as to your thoughts and ideas.

Suggestions were made to continue meeting frequently to keep the momentum going. It was moved, seconded and carried to meet in two weeks on May 8th at 7:00 pm. Next week on May 1st, 7:00 pm. the July 4th Tea Party committee will meet.

After a lengthy discussion, a motion was moved and seconded that the meeting adjourn. Motion carried.

What A Great Turnout in McAllen!

The McAllen Tax Day Tea Party had about 1200 participants at Archer Park that all came to voice support of the Constitution of the United States and uniting their voices to say, "Washington, enough is enough!" We had a cross-section of Valleyites from McAllen and surrounding towns standing together: Hispanics, Anglos, white collar, blue collar, young, old, families, students. Chants of "USA" were heard throughout the program.

What Do You Serve With Tea?

It is fine and right the American people show their displeasure with their government through the planned “tea party” demonstrations this coming April 15th; and hopefully, the task will be accomplished in a peaceful and respectful manner. It is of the greatest importance that none of the antics, recently displayed by the European anarchists at the G20 meetings, be duplicated at a single one of these events. Furthermore, if these events are to have any lasting meaning, it is not sufficient to simply proclaim our anger against oppressive taxes, out of control spending and the other current policies of our government we so steadfastly oppose; we must, in due course and in short order, state clearly and succinctly an affirmative course of action for the future. If not, what is there to distinguish us from the anarchists, who oppose everything and stand for nothing? It is not enough to say “Down with this!” or “Down with that!”; for if we can muster no more than that, and express nothing further than our temporary outrage, if all we require is a venting of our current displeasure, then it will easily be ignored and soon forgotten by our political princes; and nothing further will be achieved. Political passion alone, void of the advancement of true and positive ideals and goals, those born only of rage and opposition to the status quo and nothing else, either quickly fizzle away or go the way of the French Revolution.

Let us not waste the momentum and the tireless efforts expended and put forth by so many to organize these “parties”. For if the culminations of those efforts is a single day of chanting, hand painted signs and tea bags wantonly wasted, then never has so much effort been put forth for so little. But if those efforts mark only the beginning, a clear and forceful announcement and proclamation of things to come to our tone-deaf and arrogant ruling class, then truly it will have been worth our efforts.

I have previously written often and passionately of the arrogance and contempt with which our political ruling class views those they govern. How often must we endure the false promises of politicians, only to see them shamelessly broken once elected? How can we once and for all ensure they avoid the lurid seduction of Washington; the seemingly irresistible temptation that comes with wielding power and influence? Our founders envisioned God-fearing, moral “citizen-politicians”, who after serving briefly, would return to their lives as citizens. Not even in their wildest imagination did they envision a permanent and hereditary governing class. Again, while it is fine and just to proclaim our displeasure with the current actions of our elected officials; and while they may hear us and respond accordingly this one time, due to the strength and volume of our collective voice, expect them to return to their old, arrogant and dismissive ways soon indeed, particularly once our placards have been discarded, our collective voice lowered and we return to our real daily business of living; caring and providing for our sons and daughters.

The affirmative course of action for the future then, the end result of the vast and tireless organizational efforts put forth by so many, should and must be the ultimate return of our government to its rightful owners. I for one believe only through limiting the terms of our elected officials can we finally slay or at least restrain the monster our government and the political class have become; this must be our first order of business. Unless we sustain our efforts until this is accomplished, any of our other efforts will be futile and any gains will be fleeting. For the monster we’ve created in Washington has broken free of its restraints; its running amok and terrorizing the people; it’s an ugly and cunning creature and now that it’s loose, it’s determined not to be subdued or restrained. And make no mistake about it; this Frankenstein is truly of our own making. I’ll not bother at this time to chronicle the monsters history, or the method of its construction, for that is a topic in and of itself; and worthy of a lengthy extended discussion for a later time. Let it suffice to say we created it, we nurtured it and we allowed it to grow, stupidly thinking all along it was within our power to control. Now it has broken free and has turned upon us.

It will not be easy to put this monster back in its dungeon. We have tried before with little success, and have even wounded it from time to time during our efforts to return it to its dark cage. But it has become a master of the tactical retreat and has so far escaped capture; and while it licks its wounds from time to time after these encounters, it always reemerges stronger and ever more belligerent towards the people. The monster that is Washington must be subdued and the government returned to the people, truly returned to the people, before it’s too late. I have no doubt our politicians will take notice of the coming tea parties, but mark my words; they’re already planning on how to ride out the storm. They’ve become adept at pacifying us when they feel our outrage growing, but we cannot be fooled by another tactical retreat. It’s absolutely imperative we press on and on, until we ultimately regain our government. Only the removal of the political class, a return of the monster to its dank, dark cage will do.

We need to ask ourselves, once and for all, if the business of governance and politics really requires such skill and practice that only life-long devotion to the craft makes one worthy and able to govern? Are the machinations of the legislative process so complex, are they so impossible for the “citizen-politician” to comprehend; is the maze of governance so difficult to maneuver so as to make anyone other than a life-long politician an effective legislator? I doubt it to be so; but even if true, we could only hope it to be so. The logical end product of more “citizen-politicians” would then be less legislation, not more; and a definite boon to the people.

It matters little how term limits for elected officials becomes the law; a constitutional amendment works fine for me; but until it becomes so, any real and substantial change is impossible, and it is only a matter of time until the monster breaks loose his bonds to once again terrorize the people. Never mind the biscuits or crumpets serve me a pitchfork and torch with my tea; and when we’re done with tea, let’s go capture a monster.

McAllen Tea Party wants to go on after April 15th to form the Rio Grande Valley Tea Party Association that will allow each Valley town to have its own chapter under it. The group would have a unifying factor and more clout when dealing with local, state and national politics. The Tea Parties nationwide will, hopefully, be able to unite with one another and with other like-minded groups all over America to take back our country from leaders who have turned deaf ears to the people and are far too busy with their own agenda! Rumors of Tea Party Sabotage True, But Unnoticed

We had two incidents at the McAllen Tea Party, both of which went unnoticed by most everyone. We had a group that began with about 2 or 3 people and grew to about 9 people that were counter-protestors that came with signs and stood across the street. We had a group of undercover security that quietly asked them to be sure and stay on the other side of the street. They caused no problems and were exercising their rights, as we were.

One thing that irritated me supremely was one sign they held that read "Freedom Isn't Free". We believe that, too, don't we? ... But when interviewed, the young man said that taxes were good because we get as lot of things from taxes - as if taxes bought the freedom he was lauding in his sign! Meanwhile, the attendees at McAllen Tea Party were paying respects and thanking the very veterans that shed their blood and gave their lives for the freedom he was implying taxes paid for! Our U.S. history is made from the very sacrifices so many men and women have fought and died for, so we could rally on Tax Day!

A young man was in the crowd and beginning to heckle, but, again, our undercover security people were right there to ask him very quietly to "move on", which he did. I only was made aware of these incidents when I saw the counter-protesters on the local TV news. My husband was standing right beside the young man, who was quietly asked to move on by security. Thank you, security team. We appreciate you!

This Stimulus Watch makes me ask these questions, however: "Why should the federal government pay for things that the states and cities ought to be paying for? Why should Floridians pay for building Texas highways? Do we realize the question of states rights should be in the front of our minds... because we are fast losing those rights? When the federal government pays (with our tax dollars, of course), they have all kinds of strings attached. The bottom line is more government control and more taxes for the people. Are We the People waking up yet? I think the Nationwide Tea Parties popping up all over are a good indication that the people are, indeed, waking up!

Now, take a look at what McAllen is proposing. (The only other Valley town is Brownsville.)

Taxed Enough Already (TEA) Rally

We received this from one of our sister groups. They are having their rallies on April 15th, but at a different time and place. We want to invite them to join us at 4:00 PM in McAllen in the vacant lot across from the main Post Office in McAllen for our Tea Party rally.

Are you fed up with a Congress and a president who:
• vote for a $500 billion tax bill without even reading it?
• are spending trillions of borrowed dollars, leaving a debt our great-grandchildren will be paying?
• consistently give special interest groups billions of dollars in earmarks to help get themselves re-elected?
• want to take your wealth and redistribute it to others?
• punish those who practice responsible financial behavior and reward those who do not?
• admit to using the financial hurt of millions as an opportunity to push their political agenda?
• run up trillions of dollars of debt and then sell that debt to countries such as China?
• want government controlled health care?
• want to take away the right to vote with a secret ballot in union elections?
• refuse to stop the flow of millions of illegal immigrants into our country?
• appoint a defender of child pornography to the Number 2 position in the Justice Department?
• want to force doctors and other medical workers to perform abortions against their will?
• want to impose a carbon tax on your electricity, gas and home heating fuels?
• want to reduce your tax deductibility for charitable gifts?
• take money from your family budget to pay for their federal budget?

If so, participate in the TEA party rally, the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party.

It is my hope that even if there is not a Tea Party near you that you would be willing to make the trip to. Skip a couple of Starbucks or hold off on pizza night. Use the dough for gas money and let the Fat Cats take notice us. The only way to stop feeling helpless is to stop being helpless. We have a real chance to be heard. A chance to be notice. A chance to stand up and be counted. But only if you show up. It’s your life our childrens future. I believe it’s worth the sacrifice and inconvience to drive to another town to be heard to be noticed to be counted and to stop feeling helpless. Enough is enough.

My last post brings me to another point. We should try to coordinate our rallies with those from organizations like Fairtax.org and other groups who want to change the tax code. We could create a much bigger group and show of force. Here is a forum for Fairtax “http://fairtaxnation.ning.com/forum” I suggest we try to make some connections and really make a statement. (You don’t necessarily need to support the fairtax, but we do have a common goal and should harness that power.)

Get Into the Swing of Things!

I just ordered some bumper stickers and a T-shirt to wear at the McAllen Tea Party rally. I'm wondering, though, how many cars I'm gonna need to put all those bumper stickers on. Hmm...

Another problem I'm having is realizing that we're among a lot of dyed-in-the-wool Democrats...you know, those people who are for the "gimme" programs? I'm afraid that, as I drive my car around here, I might have several angry Obama Democrats ramming my bumper to get rid of the stickers! Hmm... I'll have to think some more about the stickers, I guess, especially the ones that are against the free-spending politicians in Washington, DC.

I hope we can have a lot of signs at the rally. Check out the pics we posted on our website at www.mcallenteaparty.webs.com. Cincinnati had about 4-5,000 people this last weekend. They had lots of
great signs. Take a look. Great crowd...

Nationwide Tea Parties

Building upon the success of the February 27th "Chicago Tea Party" Rallies, many of the organizers are now working to develop an even larger day of protests set to happen on April 15th, 2009. These protest rallies are known as the Tax Day Tea Party... and they are popping up all over the nation.

Tea Parties being held on April 15th are being sponsored by groups and individuals, such as Smart Girl Politics, TCOT (Top Conservatives on Twitter), Don'tGo Movement, and Michelle Malkin. All of these organizations are promoting the Nationwide Tax Day Tea Parties taking place in cities across the US.

You can go to www.taxdayteaparty.com and click on your state to find a list of parties being held. There have already been some parties in Texas, but many more are still waiting for Tax Day on April 15th.
